Responsible Gambling: Tools That Work, and Where to Get Help

This site covers casinos that sit outside the national self-exclusion scheme. That makes this page more important here than it would be on a British-licensed site, not less, because the default protections do not apply and the ones that do have to be set up deliberately.

Everything below is free or low cost, and none of it depends on an operator's cooperation.

If You Need Help Right Now

The National Gambling Helpline is free and confidential on 0808 8020 133, twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. It does not appear on phone bills. You do not need to be in debt, in crisis, or certain about anything before you call — most callers are simply worried and want to talk it through.

If you would rather not speak to anyone, GamCare runs a live chat service through its website with the same advisers.

Blocking Tools That Reach Offshore Casinos

The national scheme only reaches operators licensed in Great Britain. These three layers do not have that limitation.

Device-Level Blockers

BetBlocker is free, run by a registered charity, and blocks tens of thousands of gambling domains including offshore ones. It installs on phones, tablets and computers, works on a router to cover a whole household, and once a restriction period is set it cannot be removed early — not even by you.

Gamban is a paid alternative with a similar reach and a subscription model. Both are more effective than the national register for the specific purpose of blocking sites like the ones this website covers.

Bank-Level Gambling Blocks

Monzo, Starling, Revolut, Lloyds, Barclays, HSBC, NatWest, Santander and most other British banks now offer a gambling transaction block in their app. Switched on, it declines any payment to a merchant coded as gambling, whatever the merchant's licence or location.

Most apply a deliberate cooling-off delay of forty-eight to seventy-two hours before the block can be lifted. That friction is the point. It is one of the single most effective interventions available, and it takes about thirty seconds to enable.

Operator-Level Limits

Almost every casino, including those outside the national scheme, offers deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders and self-exclusion within its own account settings. These only cover that one brand, but they are immediate and free.

Set them in your first session, before anything is at stake. Limits set calmly hold better than limits set mid-chase.

The National Self-Exclusion Scheme

If you want to shut off every British-licensed operator at once, registration with the national scheme does exactly that for six months, one year or five years. It cannot be reversed once started, and when the term ends it stays active until you deliberately end it, with a further cooling-off period after that.

It does not reach offshore sites. Combining it with a device blocker and a bank block closes that gap, and our guide to how the scheme works explains the mechanics in full.

Warning Signs Worth Taking Seriously

Not a diagnostic list, but the patterns that most often come up when people describe how things changed.

Betting more than you planned, or for longer. Chasing losses with a bigger stake. Gambling with money set aside for something else. Borrowing to fund it, including credit cards or a friend. Hiding the extent of it from people close to you. Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down. Gambling to escape a mood rather than for entertainment. Continuing when it has already cost a relationship, a job or savings.

One of these on its own means little. Several together is worth a conversation with the helpline, and that call costs nothing.

UK Support Organisations

GamCare

Operates the National Gambling Helpline, plus free one-to-one counselling, group sessions and moderated peer forums across England, Scotland and Wales.

BeGambleAware

Independent information, self-assessment tools and a directory of local treatment services. A good starting point if you want to work out where you stand before speaking to anyone.

Gordon Moody

Residential treatment and intensive support for severe gambling harm, including dedicated programmes for women. Free at the point of use.

Gamblers Anonymous

Peer-led meetings across the UK, in person and online, based on a twelve-step model. GamAnon runs parallel meetings for family members.

Citizens Advice and StepChange

Free, independent debt advice where gambling has caused financial harm. Neither charges, and both are used to this situation — there is no lecture attached.

If Someone Else Is Struggling

The helpline supports family members and friends, not only the person gambling. GamAnon runs meetings specifically for relatives. Practical steps that help: bank blocks on joint accounts, keeping your own finances separate, and getting advice before lending money — because paying off a debt without addressing the cause is the most common way a situation gets worse rather than better.

Keeping It Under Control

Set a budget before you open a lobby, not during a session. Treat it as the price of an evening's entertainment rather than as an investment that might return. Set deposit limits while calm. Never gamble with borrowed money — which is why we say what we do about credit cards, even where a casino accepts them. Take real breaks, and stop when the fun does.

And if it has stopped being fun, that is enough of a reason on its own. 0808 8020 133, free, confidential, any hour.
