Keppel Offshore & Marine
is a main driver in the development
of Singapore as a centre of
excellence for offshore and
marine technology.
At the inauguration of Keppel
Offshore & Marine on 1 May
2002, Keppel Corporation Executive
Chairman Lim Chee Onn kickstarted
Keppel's Centre of Excellence.
Working closely with the National
University of Singapore, Keppel
Offshore & Marine has since
established the Keppel Professorship
in offshore and marine engineering.
Through extensive R&D activities,
Keppel's Centre of Excellence
aims to build a repository of
expertise, experience and knowledge
that will equip the local offshore
and marine industry to meet
growing challenges in the global
arena.
Commending Keppel on how it
leverages technology and innovation,
Minister for Transport Yeo Cheow
Tong said at the inaugural Keppel
Professor lecture: "The
absence of offshore oil and
gas exploration [in Singapore]
has not stopped Keppel from
becoming the world leader in
this field."

Building A Blueprint
For Technology
Keppel Offshore & Marine
sponsors a Professorship in
Ocean, Offshore and Marine Technology,
in the National University of
Singapore (NUS).
Said Mr Lim Chee Onn, Executive
Chairman of Keppel Corporation,
"Keppel is committed to
spearhead the future development
of Singapore's offshore and
marine industry. One of the
first steps is building up Singapore's
talent pool as well as research
and development activities in
offshore and marine technology.
"Keppel's initiatives
are in sync with the geo-economics
environment in this part of
the world. Singapore is located
in a region rich in oil &
gas and we have been a maritime
and logistics hub for over a
century.
"With our newly acquired
status as a knowledge hub possessing
advanced IT and telecommunications
expertise, we have the necessary
infrastructure to develop a
vibrant technology centre for
all industry players."
The Keppel Professorship was
established with initial funding
of S$1.5 million, to initiate
research projects as well as
product and technology development
in the offshore and marine industry.
Visiting professors in related
fields will also be sponsored
to promote wider participation
from other industry members
both within and outside Singapore.

Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer
of Keppel Offshore & Marine
explains Keppel's contribution
to the development of Singapore
as an international hub for
offshore and marine technology.
"More than 15 years ago,
with the support of Keppel management,
we decided to broaden our skills
base to include design and engineering.
We started investing in people
and technology.
"As Singapore had little
infrastructure in offshore and
marine technology, we sent our
people on scholarships and various
other schemes to UK, USA, Germany,
France Norway and Japan to be
trained. In this way, we brought
the technology into Singapore.
"We have since also acquired
intellectual properties and
enhanced them as well as developed
our own proprietary rig designs
and systems."
Keppel continues to invest
in technology, growing its R&D
companies.
Offshore Technology Development
owns patents to jackup rig designs
and equipment which feature
extensively on rigs built by
Keppel FELS.
The Deepwater Technology Group
has developed semisubmersible
designs which are suitable for
operations worldwide.
Turnkey solutions for specialised
newbuilding are provided by
Keppel O&M's Marine Technology
Development. Its innovative
solutions package designs with
critical equipment to meet customers'
operational needs.
Beyond meeting the industry's
needs, contributions made by
these companies enrich the flow
of knowledge and technology
between Keppel O&M and the
Centre of Excellence.
"With some 15 years of
experience in this area of technology
behind us, Keppel Offshore &
Marine has accumulated extensive
network, skills and expertise
which can be leveraged to enhance
our efforts towards building
a technology Centre of Excellence
in Singapore," said Mr
Choo.
"We have people with innovative
attitudes and aptitude as well
as the necessary corporate culture
to make this idea workable and
successful.
"I see this Centre as
one of the critical components
in enhancing Singapore's position
as an oil and gas centre as
well as the leader in the offshore
and marine industry. It will
be the avenue for us to further
develop and own advanced industry
knowledge and technology,"
Mr Choo added.
